Requesting a quotation for a steel wire drawing line is not only a commercial step. It is a technical data collection process.
The more complete the RFQ, the faster and more accurate the quotation can be. A supplier can only propose the right drawing machine, pay-off, take-up, auxiliaries and automation level if the production requirements are clear from the beginning.
This checklist is designed for technical buyers, production managers and plant engineers preparing an RFQ for a new or replacement steel wire drawing line.
It applies to wet or dry drawing lines, bull block machines, and inverted strippers configurations.

WHY A COMPLETE RFQ SAVES TIME FOR EVERYONE
An incomplete RFQ usually leads to multiple rounds of clarification. As a machinery supplier, MFL Group team need to ask for missing data, and the buyer needs to recover information from production or quality teams, and the quotation process slows down.
A structured RFQ helps both sides work more efficiently. For the buyer, it makes quotations easier to compare because each supplier receives the same technical baseline. For the supplier, it reduces assumptions and allows the proposal to reflect the real production requirement.
In addition, when the RFQ is clear, the technical and commercial comparison becomes more reliable.
HOW TO USE THIS CHECKLIST
Use this checklist before sending your RFQ to our team of experts.
Fill in all fields you can answer with certainty. Where you do not have the information, write TBD or MFL Group recommendation requested. This is better than leaving the field blank, because it tells us whether the missing data is unknown, flexible or intentionally open for technical recommendation.
Fields marked Mandatory should normally be completed before sending the RFQ. These are the data points the supplier needs to understand the application and prepare a meaningful quotation. Fields marked Optional / recommended are not always blocking, but they help optimize the proposal and reduce the number of clarification rounds.
Even with a complete RFQ, MFL Group team may still ask clarifying questions. This is normal. The purpose of the checklist is not to eliminate technical dialogue, but to make that dialogue more focused and productive.
RFQ CHECKLIST
Section 1 — Wire Material and Product Specification
This section defines what the line must process and what the finished wire must achieve.
| Field | Priority | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Rod/Wire material | Mandatory | Steel grade (specify the list of all steel grades), carbon content, tensile strength, alloy type or reference standard if available. |
| Final wire application | Mandatory | Building wire, rope wire, spring wire, PC wire, PC strand, bead wire, welding wire, cold heading wire (CHQ), nail wire or other. |
| Required mechanical properties | Mandatory if specified by product standard | Tensile strength range, elongation, straightness or other required values. |
| Wire product standards | Mandatory if applicable | ISO (e.g. ISO 6892-1:2016 ; ISO 4954:2022 ), ASTM, DIN, EN (e.g. EN 10218-2 ), customer specification or national standard. |
| Inlet diameter range | Mandatory | Rod or wire diameter entering the line. |
| Outlet diameter range | Mandatory | Finished wire diameter required at the end of the line. |
| Coating or plating on finished wire | Mandatory if applicable | Plain, phosphated, galvanized, copper-coated, brass-coated, bright wire or other. |
Practical note
For many steel wire applications, we select the drawing line not only around diameter reduction but also around final mechanical properties.
Section 2 — Production Requirements
This section explains how much wire the line must produce and under which operating conditions.
| Field | Priority | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Required production output | Optional / recommended | Tons/year (specify working days/hours per year). |
| Maximum drawing speed | Optional / recommended | m/s (ft/min) at the finished wire diameter. |
| Operating pattern | Optional | Continuous production, batch production or frequent product changes. |
| Number of finished diameters | Mandatory if multi-product line | List the diameter range and most common sizes. |
Practical note
A line designed for one stable product at high speed is different from a line designed for frequent diameter and material changes. If flexibility is important, make it explicit in the RFQ.
Section 3 — Drawing Process Configuration
This section defines the drawing technology and process route.
| Field | Priority | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Drawing process | Mandatory | Dry drawing or wet drawing. |
| Condition of the incoming wire rod | Mandatory | Specify whether surface preparation, phosphating or lime is included in the line scope or handled upstream, or green rod. |
| Condition of the incoming wire | Mandatory | Annealed, pre-drawn, galvanized. |
| Die cooling requirement | Mandatory | Direct or indirect water-cooled. |
| Die | Mandatory | Dimensions of die cases, rotating or static die cassette and their positions. |
| First block | Mandatory | Accumulation or standard. |
| Descaling required? | Mandatory if included in line scope | Mechanical descaler, brush descaler, shot blast, other or handled upstream. |
| In-line diameter measurement | Optional / recommended | Yes, no, gauge type preference or supplier recommendation. |
| In-line surface defect detection | Optional / recommended | Eddy current tester, optical inspection or supplier recommendation. |
Practical note
Buyers do not need to define every technical parameter in advance. If the number of passes, slip configuration or reduction schedule is not known, leave the field as MFL Group recommendation requested. What matters is that the supplier receives enough input and output data to calculate the correct process configuration.
Section 4 — Pay-off and Take-up Equipment
The handling equipment before and after the drawing machine is one of the most frequent sources of incomplete RFQs. Buyers often focus on the drawing machine itself and forget to specify how the wire enters and exits the line.
Pay-off — Input Side
| Field | Priority | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Input format | Mandatory | Rod coil, wire coil, spool. |
| Maximum input coil weight | Mandatory if coil-fed | kg or tons. |
| Maximum input coil dimensions | Mandatory if coil-fed | OD/ID and height in mm or meters. |
| Input spool drawings | Mandatory if spool-fed | 2D Drawings. |
| Preferred pay-off type | Optional | |
| Coil loading method | Optional / recommended | Forklift, crane, automatic loading or manual. |
| Building height | Mandatory | Meters/feet. |
Take-up — Output Side
| Field | Priority | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Output format | Mandatory | Coil, spool, drum. |
| Target finished coil / spool weight | Mandatory | kg or tons. |
| Output spool drawings | Mandatory if spool | 2D Drawings. |
| Carriers drawings | Mandatory if coil | 2D Drawings. |
| Compacting required? | Optional / recommended | Yes, no or future provision. |
| Strapping or wrapping integrated? | Optional / recommended | Yes, no or future provision. |
| Finished package handling | Optional / recommended | Crane, forklift, conveyor, automatic handling or manual. |
Practical note
Pay-off and take-up data directly affect line layout, automation level, operator workload and quotation price. A drawing machine quotation without clear handling data may be technically incomplete, even if the drawing section itself is well defined.
Section 5 — Installation, Utilities, and Site Constraints
This section helps the supplier evaluate whether the proposed line can be installed and operated in the available plant environment.
Plant Layout
| Field | Priority | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Available floor space | Mandatory | Length × width in meters. |
| Ceiling height | Mandatory if space is constrained | Minimum available height in the installation area. |
| Existing crane capacity | Optional / recommended | Tons; relevant for installation, maintenance and coil handling. |
| Preferred line orientation | Optional / recommended | Straight, U-shape, L-shape or supplier recommendation. |
| Foundation limitations | Optional / recommended | Existing foundation, new foundation possible, vibration constraints. |
| Access constraints | Optional / recommended | Door dimensions, aisle width, transport route inside the plant. |
| Existing upstream/downstream equipment | Mandatory if integrated | Pickling, phosphating, annealing, coating, spooling or packaging lines to connect. |
